If no one ever bought anything from an unsolicited E-mail or even opened an unsolicited E-mail, we probably would see a dramatic reduction in spam ("Readers' Ideas Take A Bite Out Of Spam," Dec. 20/27, 2004).
Unfortunately, too many of us are gullible enough to believe that we can meet sexy housewives in our neighborhood.

PeopleSoft Users Beware
Oracle has finally purchased PeopleSoft ("Oracle Gets PeopleSoft, At Last," Dec. 13, 2004). This does not bode well for those who use PeopleSoft applications.
Yes, there are guarantees from Oracle about continued support, and all the niceties and promises.
But companies using PeopleSoft should be wary. Within 18 months, Oracle will inform PeopleSoft users that they will need to start redesigning their applications to conform to a more Oracle-oriented design. This will cost companies much money for redesign and implementation. Never fear, though. Oracle will gladly help in the redesign, for a "consulting" fee.

Kudos For Lycos
It's amazing that the ones who scream the loudest for justice are the criminals ("Lycos Europe Appears To Have Canned Its Spam War," Dec. 3, 2004). Why don't the Internet service providers block them or sue them for their criminal activities? The deluge of spam messages I get costs me several hours a week in maintenance time trying to block them because my ISP won't.
Are there any lawyers out there who will take this on? Probably not--not enough money involved. I applaud Lycos for its efforts. I hope someone else picks the gauntlet up and runs with it.
