Wouldn't the problem of password cracking be solved if all systems temporarily locked out accounts that had multiple failed logon attempts ("How To Build Better Passwords," June 20)? I can think of quite a few other solutions that would prevent cracking software from working without needing these incredibly long and complex passwords.

Livelihood At Stake
When I saw the June 13 issue of InformationWeek, the face on the cover reminded me of myself and the thousands of others who lost their jobs, their self-esteem, and, in some cases, their spouses and homes ("Midcareer Crisis"). Along with 10,000 other IT professionals in the Denver area, I was laid off during the AT&T Broadband-Comcast Communications merger. Two years later, I've all but exhausted my savings, spend eight or so hours every day looking for work, and am now relocating either to a homeless shelter or back to New Jersey to live with my parents. There are no jobs in the Denver area.
Resentful? Yes, somewhat. What AT&T-Comcast did to us ought to be illegal. Return to school at the ripe age of 52? Probably ... but what to study and what industry to try and enter remain as elusive as the job I'm trying to find.
