Going Too Far?
I don't want a smart, connected home and I don't want a smart, connected car. The flip-side of "smart" is rampant data collection, whether for marketing or surveillance. The flip-side of "connected" is hackable.

Platform and Product
I think your analysis of Product and Platform is spot-on. I probably spend too much time watching the Military Channel, but when I think of the superior Product, a Tiger tank might have been the best of its generation, but the Platform of close air support and abundant, inexpensive Sherman's won the day.

It does paint a kind of odd direction for the future. Perhaps there will be only three or four platforms, like those you mention. The rest of innovation will have to "orbit" one of those platforms. Fortunately, platforms seem to come and go, otherwise oligarchy would set in. I notice you didn't mention Microsoft!

Digital Threats (And Opportunities) Abound
If Google or Facebook or Amazon decided to slap down a few billion or even a few million dollars in your industry to buy a digital/platform innovator, would you be worried? I suspect we all would. Do you think Honeywell worried much about Google before GoDogle paid $3.2 billion for smart thermostat/smoke detector company Nest? I'm sure more than a few FedEx and UPS executives are paying close attention to, especially with Jeff Bezos boasting on 60 Minutes about his future package-delivering drones.
