Beyond commercial code
Even if hackathons don't produce commercial/enterprise-class software, they can promote another good: a developer culture of creativity, teamwork, and, yes, fun. I wouldn't underestimate the importance of that accomplishment.

Spot on Rob! creative energy, flair, teamwork and the fun factor are what make Hackathons work. I personally wouldn't limit to the external community, but make sure internal dev, ops and even security are involved. Great way to establish new relationships and build creative culture -- internally and externally.
