re: Is Personalized Medicine In Your Future?
I think personalized medicine or at least an increase in health IT is going to happen, particularly at the demand of rural patients. I read this article the other day that said that only like 11% of physicians are practicing in rural areas (see "The Challenges of Rural Health Care" http://ignite.optuminsight.com.... So the only way for those residents to get care is to either drive long distances or use technology to access their physicians remotely. THAT I think will drive personalized remote care, if nothing else.

re: Is Personalized Medicine In Your Future?
Personalized medicine is definitely a few years away, but I think Dr. Emanuel is being a bit negative. Yes, Type II diabetes is definitely more of a lifestyle disease, but there are so many genetic disease that can be served by the genetic advances in biomarkers and drugs that can specifically target a disease based on its propensity to work in that person. So I think that before we start discussing the ethical issues, we should let the actual medicine/IT approach advance.
