Batye, such intentions will reflect only on later stage.

"I'm saying how I see it... plus with most of my indian friends adopting new way of thinking... mixing east and west way... getting smarter but more proper... as I do not hear much about... baksish must be provided to get something done... this days they say as long as you have right paper work - things get done... no one saying you must give bakshish... to get things done... but who knows :)... - what you think/know???"

Batye, frankly speaking canvassing and bribing are very less; but there are rare cases of such incidents too.

Re: Nice comparison, but ...
"if a sales rep from a supplying company started giving gifts to people inside my company only to gain financially by winning over our business then yes, I agree that could be bribery. However, I have worked with sales reps from companies who would buy donuts for my crew when they stopped by the office, not to gain anything; they already had our business. They simply brought in gifts when they visited as an angle on keeping the customer happy."

Stacey, things can also happen in that way, but very rarely. Those who possess such kind heart are minority in our community.

@ Gigi3

I think I see where you are coming from. For example if a sales rep from a supplying company started giving gifts to people inside my company only to gain financially by winning over our business then yes, I agree that could be bribery. However, I have worked with sales reps from companies who would buy donuts for my crew when they stopped by the office, not to gain anything; they already had our business. They simply brought in gifts when they visited as an angle on keeping the customer happy.

Re: Nice comparison, but ...
"Education and true freedoom is a right way to better gov. and better economy... please correct me if I'm wrong... but India economy is do grow at good pace... as Indian gov. trying hard to get right people in right places..."

Batye, right people at right place is important. If everyone works in right mode; there won't be any need for bribe or gifts. Now Indian government has introduced certain rights like "Rights to Information", "Right to get service" etc to enhance the responsibility & deliverability of government employees.
