I think that when you go through these steps, as I have, and you are in a hurry you can sometimes get a bit confused. The ability to mass email contacts from LinkedIn is probably an option that should really be removed. 

I get that the company is trying to gain users, because without them LinkedIn doesn't have a business model. But alienating existing users doesn't work well either.
