Re: How the Pony Express could look like a 16-wheeler
Excellent point. It's not so much about the security but CONTROL. People want to feel like they manage the whole shebang. If it's not within your close grasp, you feel like you're losing it. Brings up a good point about IT folks & the need to feel in control of the environment.

I think its also about balancing criteria about which servers/applications make sense to keep onsite versus push to the cloud.  There will always be applications and data that are deemend higher priority which many IT folks would require having it pried from their cold dead hands before they feel comfortable sending it into the hybrid space where they feel they may have less control over it.

It requires tons of planning & testing but when it works, it's great. It's definitely something that anyone with virtualized workloads should do for sure.

How the Pony Express could look like a 16-wheeler
Love the analogy Art made between public cloud/private cloud data centers: airports between which we run the Pony Express. That is often the case today. In future, I don't think IT would try to move the 50 GB virtual machine over the wire for quick, auxilliary processing in the cloud. Rather, you'd have a cold copy stored there that could be activated in a few minutes, then route the data stream to it. If that isn't set up in advance, then it won't work, needless to say.
