The measuring of application use is an excellent example of the positive uses of monitoring employee activity. It can gauge how the more effective salespeople use applications. I know of a Fortune 100 company who did just this, monitoring desktops and laptops, and then devising training based on how top salespeople went about their business.

I was particularly glad to see an app was developed to monitor employee activity on the iPad. Up to now there was nothing available (except for jailbroken iPads), which of course left not only a security black hole, but a productivity one as well.

Building the iPad was a major project, so concerns about security, productivity and effectiveness remain a black hole for rest of the iPad business community. It sure would be valuable if Apple would open its code sufficiently to allow third party development of apps that would make it available and affordable to all. Am I wishing for the moon? Will it be jettisoned to one of those big ole black holes? Or perchance the need will be so overwhelming that it will be done?

We had a similar experience at my company - we deployed iPads to our sales reps, it was the best decision we made. After tested a bunch of apps, we chose "SupeRep" (www.wrnty.com) which is a sales rep app. It has every possible feature that a sales rep can need and it has helped to improve the communication between the managers and sales reps. In addition, we've seen a significant increase in our sales as a consequence of using this app. The transition from the laptop to the iPad was quite a swift one as well.
