Re: Is Your IT Team Working In A Vacuum?
The current situation is the joint effect of both business and IT side. Both sides need to communicate and work  closely to have viable evolution instead of either "doing just enough" or a hectic revolution..

Re: Is Your IT Team Working In A Vacuum?
Thanks for this, Dave. It seems there's a neverending stream of things to talk about when it comes to new devices, technologies, and software in IT... and that can leave us forgeting some very important things, like this right here. At the end of the day, the reason you keep a job (other than the need to eat) is because you enjoy the challenge and want to feel like you're making a difference. It's easy to feel stifled if you feel like you've lost your agency in your own department, but it's important to remember that you have a role in that yourself - and you can challenge yourself to do better.

I think it's fair to say that IT is particularly guilty of (or, susceptible to) this phenomenon that you describe. The phrase 'keeping the lights on' is oft-repeated here on InformationWeek, and I think that IT finds itself at a crossroads between doing 'just enough' and deciding to take a more active role. The business side has a role in this, too - if they've conditioned IT to do 'just enough' and not to speak up when they have a solution, then they share in the blame. However, ultimately we can only control what we do, and if we want someone to treat our opinion with more reverance, we should make an effort to prove it's worth them doing so.
