Re: Evolution Of Data Scientist Role
A very interesting look into the mind of a real, live data scientist. Thanks, Kevin. It's a role we've heard much about, but there's always something a little different between reading a white paper on how important data scientists are going to be, and reading a data scientist's opinion on how important data scientists are going to be. Certainly, I've felt a bit of skepticism as to just how many companies actually have someone on the payroll with the title 'data scientist' - not counting, say, research firms or educational institutions. I am willing to believe, as Mr. Downs suggests, that that number will explode in the coming years.

The Internet of Things seems like a plausible explanation for 'why' in it's own right - the simple fact that these data revelations will now effect consumers' every day lives (in the form of what information their IoT connected device spits out) sounds like a good enough reason for any company selling anything  to want to get in on the action and hire a data scientist. I can agree with some of these other explanations as well, though - the need for smarter, data-driven workflow apps makes sense in the modern world. I don't know if I can agree with data-driven hiring, though - but maybe that's a conversation for another time.
