AWS
AWS is king right now but the other companies chasing have huge pockets. Once some of the mid level providers like Datapipe, Hosting.com and Layered Tech get acquired it could get real interesting!

Re: AWS
anon,

Of all the companies that are chasing Amazon right now-Only MSFT,IBM & GOOGLE have really deep pockets to take on AMZN head to head on the pricing front effectively.

Even there also(Look at the Massive Job Losses MSFT had to take recently) there is a clear limit how much they will bear.

Eventually if Things are'nt quite working out they will Backout and let AMZN Feast on more and more consumers!

Regards

Ashish.

Re: Microsoft cloud
Laurianne,

That was a most interesting point made by Charlie here.

Just was wondering how does the Anti-Trust Investigation against MSFT in China plays into things today.

If things do get a little uglier between China -US just like whats happening between US-Russia;Microsoft might be left chasing a Country where their Sales Targets go totally for a Toss.

Regards

Ashish.

Re: AWS
Amazon may still the king in the Cloud service business, but competitors are catching up. Early, this year, analysts already predicted that the launch of Google Compute Engine (GCE) APIs could freak out Amazon. Google's development engine is as fast as Amazon's and provides an agile webscale development model and thus gives to Google the potential to chase Amazon.

Good line
Loved this: "Worrying about Amazon's future in the cloud is like worrying about the future of sand in the Sahara -- and just about as rewarding." Sums it up nicely.

Re: Good line but not great on line
Andrew - I agree that Amazon is solid in the cloud.  However I think the issue with Amazon is that they have eroded margins to the point that selling on Amazon is a total volume play and may not make any sense for many of its vendors if the volume is not adequate.  I may be wrong in that it may add to overall volume and  use that to help reduce total buy in if they have a brick and mortar as well as the click and order model

Re: Good line but not great on line
Jeff: Good point. And that would certainly fit with Amazon's overall business model.

@Jeff J,

For Amazon partners, I think the value-add is where the $$'s at, not necessarily in selling or re-selling Amazon cloud services.

Re: Good line but not great on line

pcharles09 - Absolutely agree that is the value of Amazon is the services and/or cloud services they provide. However if their stock is any indication of their health well then it speaks for itself.
