The problem is the double standard.
We can agree to disagree about what the right level of surveillance is, but what bothers me most is the inconsistency. We can spy on you but you can't know anything about us. If as a society we need more surveillance, than it should be accompanied by disclosure and oversight and transparency. It should not be so asymmetrical.

I think that's a great point. Whatever level of surveillance we as a country agree to (and in my opinion, it should be tightly limited and should target specific threats rather than a blanket "get it all" posture), we need better oversight. The Intelligence committee in Congress that oversees the NSA seems all too eager to bless whatever the NSA does. I'd like to see more push-back, more concern with civil liberties, and more opportunity to report to the public on what's going on.
