There may be a dearth in business apps, but that's not to say there are zero. The iWork suite (Keynote, Pages, Numbers) is pretty great. $10 per app at $30 total for the best of Microsoft Office, tabletized, isn't that bad. Enterprises can also take advantage of VPN applications, such as Cisco AnyConnect, and Juniper Pulse.

Part of the problem is lack of understanding on how easy it is to purchase apps in large volume and distribute them to users. Check out this blog post to see how easy it is to deploy apps to a device inventory when the right tools are put into play:

IT managers are right to note the lack of critical applications for the iPad. There's a dearth of enterprise-specific iPad apps. Our company, StoryDesk, is working to fill the gap by providing enterprise a iPad sales tool that takes advantage of the hardware's native functionality. I encourage other software entrepreneurs to consider the enterprise iPad space - there's a lot of opportunity.

Very insightful analysis! We believe that tablets (not just iPads) will gradually take over certain work in the office from desktops and laptops. However, tablets still need to solve issues like integration with other devices in order to speed the adoption. On the other hand, IT managers need to update their policies and adjust work flow in order to take advantage of tablets. Especially for Apple's products, the incompatibility with other system and lack of support will hinder the process. Here are a bit of our thoughts on using iPads at work and how tablets will affect enterprise IT:
