Re: Experience conundrum
If you're an external candidate, sure, these classes might not bolster your credentials-- though I doubt they'd hurt in most cases. But if you're an internal candidate or someone else already known to people relevant to hiring for the position, I think these classes could be helpful. I've heard of people who, as Laurie alluded, wound up on big data teams simply by having a unique combination of traits. I know a few people at big companies in very technical roles who majored in English and History, and who didn't have much tech experience before they stepped into these roles. But with some self-teaching and the right kind of personality, they were able to succeed. So while I get your point on the whole, I think the classes are still a worthwhile resource. Different tools for different needs.

Re: Experience conundrum
Thank you so much. These are great references and really help someone get their feet wet on big data.  I know your locally library has subscriptions to online technical books which may contain big data topics.  I haven't tried looking, but it's worth to try.

Re: Experience conundrum
For those looking for a great course that comes with the best price tag of all, FREE, should check out Rackspace's CloudU course on Big Data.  I've personally worked with the folks behind CloudU and they have put together a great course that covers just about all the key topics of Big Data.

Just go to Dice, Monster, or Carebuilder and tell me how many "trainee" Hadoop or HANA positions are posted with no experience necesary?

Re: Experience conundrum
I disagree. I have met many big data leaders who say people can interview their way onto their companies' big data teams by demonstrating passion, curiosity, and related skills -- music + biology for example. Online coursework bolsters your story.

If we have missed other online courses worth considering, by all means share the names here. Thanks.

Coursera Data Science Specialization
Your article referenced the Coursera Duke University Data Analysis and Stastiscal Inference Coursera course, but I am very surprised you failed to discuss the much more popular Johns Hopkins Data Science Specialization also on Coursera.  The ten courses in that specialization cover a wide variety of practical Big Data topics and are taught by faculty from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who provide real-world practial instruction on how to gather, process and analyze Big Data.

Experience conundrum
Placing any of these courses on your resume will lead to nothing.  These are all a good sampling of what technologies are out there but taking one or all will not get you a job.  In fact there are tons of people that have taken hundreds of hours of training in these technologies that can't get a job becuase they have no experience.  Finding a corporation that will actually take on a trainee in big data is like finding a needle in a hay stack.  How do you get experience if no one will hire you without it?   This is also true of many other IT positions.  How a days corporations seek H1-B visa people before developing or investing in their own employees.
