A very VMware OpenStack
This is a version of OpenStack that is particular to VMware. It of course runs the ESX Hypervisor.

VMware needed an OpenStack option
VMware must sense customers are not going to uniformly adopt vCloud Air, its hybrid service. So it's generating a second option via OpenStack. Those customers that adopt it then remain connected to VMware management as opposed to going to Microsoft Azure and Hyper-V use. Running Linux containers inside virtual machines isn't going to wash with everyone.

Cloud Openstack
Ability to build on top of existing network is indeed a big USP of Openstack. However integrating the private cloud data at various integration points, and coding on top of legacy sensitive data may not be the easiest thing to achieve. Thanks to newer and efficient distributions for cloud admins and enterprise solutions  in augment evaluation, development and deployments in a private cloud built with OpenStack technology, we have actionable solutions like HP Helion. Being free to license, it certainly speeds up deployment and simplifies the open cloud infrastructure for small scale operations and services(More at goo.gl/d09Wji)
