You would think that organizations in regulated industries would be more cautious than most about social networking. However, I spoke with someone recently who noted that the opposite is sometimes true because organizations in financial, healthcare and the like are already very experienced in working within the boundaries of strict policy and the requirement for things like auditability. So, in other words, they feel more comfortable and protected because they have already put safeguards in place that would guard against social media missteps.

I think it is important to note that many health-related non-profit organizations such as the American Lung Association, Canadian Cancer Society, and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation have been early adoptors in providing vibrant online communities for the people that they serve. I would expect for-profit health related organizations to soon join suit. Bringing social and collaboration tools to the healthcare industry is a huge opportunity to improve care and reduce costs.
