re: Mobile Health Presents Life-Changing Opportunities
I think it's apples and oranges as far as EHR adoption, development standards and interoperability.

I recently read about a smartphone plug in that someone Stanford is working on to detect cancerous mouth lesions. It takes a high-res, panoramic image of a mouth cavity and a blue fluorescent light detects possibly malignancies. Then the smartphone transmits the images to a provider for a diagnosis. This is completely independent of any other technology the physician is using and could be potentially lifesaving. Granted it is still a prototype, but it's a good example of the future of healthcare using smartphones.

re: Mobile Health Presents Life-Changing Opportunities
The authors correctly recognize the emerging importance of smartphones in health care. We are rapidly approaching a time when health care shifts from a system of inbound patients (often disconnected from their data) to that of inbound data. This holds the potential for widespread positive impacts on both heath care delivery and costs. The smartphone will be the center of all of this. I can only hope, however, that the rate of adoption comes more rapidly that weG«÷ve experienced with EHRs, which have taken decades to realize sluggish adoption, even after government mandates. Unfortunately, standards and interoperability with EHRs could slow the adoption of mobile health. We have to figure out a way to prevent that.
