The concept of a burner laptop is interesting, but I don't know about that for ordinary travelers. Also, that doesn't address the issue of keyloggers or something stealing credentials people use to log on to sites such as corporate email, banking, etc while they are on the road.

I use a small Zuni Travel Router to connect with any public networks (Wi-Fi or wired). The NAT imposed between my devices (usually laptop and phone) and the public address space should make it harder for anyone else on the public network to see me, and thus offer some additional protection. I don't know how much this helps, but I feel better with it...
