Art: Nicely done summary of the current situation between these two companies. From my perspective, HP bet the farm on Itanium -- and dumped PA-RISC and Alpha in favor of it -- and then mounted all of their operating environments and much of their intellectual capital software expertise on it. If Itanium fails, HP-UX, NonStop, and OpenVMS are in serious trouble. HP's new "converged infrastructure" plan will try to extend the life of Itanium-based servers. But I think they are just kidding themselves and throwing even more money down the Itanium sinkhole.
