Sure sounds interesting but can't we achieve the same level of Scanning at much cheaper cost by retro-fitting existing Technology for this purpose?

You know Satellite Technology or Drone Technology?

Or Automated Car Technology?

It will turn out way -way cheaper and more cost-efficent than laying Sensors all along the Major Inter-state Highway System in the US or Globally.

22,000 is an awfully big number to be expected in such a short time, but I do agree that the potential for this sort of thing is enormous. You can't have human inspectors everywhere, but the IOT will make it possible to inspect every critical point 24x7, and to have the data available immediately. And what comparisons and analyses will now be possible! Operators can determine if event D is always or sometimes proceeded by Event B, or perhaps by some combination of Events A, B and C. Maybe they didn't even know that Events A, B and/or C were even involved in Event D. This will allow the full predictive power of statistics to be brought to bear in ways inconceivable before.

Immelt sees 22,000 Predix programmers by the end of the year
Minds + Machines is a small event at a modest venue. Sounds echo from one end of the Herbst Pavilion to the other. It sits on a wood and concrete pier and was once the last stopping point for thousands of U.S. Army soldiers before they boarded ships to go deep into the Pacific to take back islands from the Japanese during WWII. But about a 1,000 people attended this year, GE's largest ever. Immelt said he expected 22,000 developers will be working on code to work with Predix and the Industrial Internet by the end of the year.

Interesting read. 

This made me think about another application for IoT infrastructure: What if sensors were on roads and bridges? Instead of all the hours that are used to inspect the infrastructure, small connected devices could be constantly doing it instead? I think that makes a ton of sense.
