re: Hypesters Put IT Credibility On The Line
Nobody seems to like the overhype, neither the sponsors who sign the checks nor the developers who then go nuts trying to deliver. So why does it keep happening?

One idea I've had recently is that sponsors and developers approach the lack of certainty associated with technology projects in different ways.

Sponsors, with a business background, see negotiating room and push for "the best deal."

If the people who have to deliver are even involved, they don't see it as a negotiation at all--they don't think that way--so they agree to things even when they know they're high-risk just to make the pressure stop.

I wrote a little series on it. (You can work back from the last one here http://tinyurl.com/9gbcxj2). What do you think?

re: Hypesters Put IT Credibility On The Line
Rob, this is a well timed article in my own workplace as I struggle with the balance of 'selling' my IT departments projects while maintaining my conservative and honest mindset to stake holders. I've found that owning a mistake or misunderstanding builds my reputation as opposed to knocking taking it down a level. When selling my idea's I like to tell a story showing the positive aspects of my proposed change along with potential downfalls if the project does not go as planned. Thanks for the article.
