I agree with your analysis. I'd just like to point out that the X-IO ISE already matches the scalable architecture you suggest -- as you add 3U ISE's, you are adding not only compute power, but also throughput and IOPS to match. Each unit is independent of the others in terms of capacity, iops and throughput, but they can all be managed as a group via REST calls. Here's the company: http://xiostorage.com/
