What will bring Server 2012 down is the inrush of ARM based servers in data centers and Microsoft's refusal to offer an ARM based server OS.

"Even if Microsoft's new OS was a complete disaster" You must be oblivious to things happening around you.

re: Windows 8 Flop Wouldn't Doom Server 2012
I must be missing all these articles where enterprises are running SAP, Oracle or any other ERP system on Macs, iPads and iPhones? Either that or typical business user now only downloads apps/music and watches movies. How do I get one of those jobs?

Seriously, until apps important to business are written so Win 8 adds value, or Win 7 is dropped from support by Microsoft, most enterprises aren't going to care about Modern UI. This latest MS thing is all about the consumer buying Apple. MS hopes they create something close to the Apple experience but still run the stuff they use at work, which for most part Apple can not. That tips the scales in favor of MS, no one wants to carry two devices around.

The real question is whether serious business apps like ERP ever run on Apple, at least outside the browser. If all ERP apps move into the browser, then MS might be in trouble on the client side. Or if ERP vendors see enough market share in Apple (finally) they port their code to run natively.
