I agree with what you said, but I believe it's hard to find an IT professional who is able to interact with doctors and be personable, which is required in this field. From my experience, people in the IT field may be a little more "socially clueless", as pointed out in the article. You may be the special case and not the norm, so it may seem like it's not a unique skillset to have. I couldn't agree more though that limiting hiring decisions to previous healthcare informatics experience only damages and limits the talent pool. There are plenty of IT pros that are capable of understanding the industry and adapting. In fact, I think it's what the industry needs.

I believe that the requisites of drive and a high IQ so vague as to apply to anyone to achieve almost anything regardless of the profession (the former weighing quite heavily). I am an IT professional with previous experience in an HMO where I worked with hundreds of doctors/nurses and lawyers. I found many more IT pros capable or willing to understand the HMO business than HC pros understanding IT. Limiting hiring decisions to previous healthcare informatics experience only damages or limits your talent pool and I believe will have negative long term indications (same siloing effect occurs in financial, government, and legal markets). The short answer is that each has its regulatory requirements and an individual worth keeping will set a personal priority to learn them quickly.

I believe that a good IT person can adapt quickly to Health IT. Another option for an IT person is to take classes and obtain a certificate or degree in medical informatics. While this may not be enough, I think it should suffice to break an IT person into the field.

I would disagree with a high IQ being necessary to break into healthcare, or any other industry for that matter.

As someone who has been hiring employees and contractors for the last thirty years, I would rather intellectualism over intelligence any time. Sometimes intelligence can actually get in the way.
