It's a big challenge for the industry, because connecting to the Internet requires satellite, and it's slow and expensive. What people are mostly using with the iPads is the ship's internal network, they're not streaming Netflix. Royal Caribbean is > planning < to improve the true Internet experience in the months ahead.

My parents recently took a cruise on the Queen Mary II and I couldn't believe it when they told me that they didn't have wi-fi in their room on the ship. Sounds like Royal Caribbean has a leg up on the competition.

That had to be a great sale for Apple and demonstrate the versatility of the iPad. This just goes to show you how big of a part technology play in our lives, but at the sometime is second nature without a thought. I think that Royal Caribbean has the right idea by supplying the iPads; I think part of the appeal is that they supply the equipment. On the other hand not providing Internet connection and just an internal connection needs to be addressed.

A natural idea for this app is to let people get it before the cruise and open up access to book spa and other appointments, say, a week or so before the cruise date. Of course, then less tech-savvy passengers are at a disadvantage. Lorna Garey, InformationWeek
