It's unfortunate that patent trolling has been going on for years. It's clearly a misuse of the patent system and does nothing to foster innovation. I can understand a company's reluctance to fight, but I hope they do fight, and win. And I hope the U.S. can get some legitimate patent reform, both to quash trolls and to ensure that only really novel ideas get a patent.

So dispiriting: it's usually better business to pay off a troll than to fight one. Dealing with this stuff has to feel like living in a neighborhood where everyone's forced to pay off the local mob. Such a baffling loophole in the system, and such an impediment to innovation.
