Excellent points, Jonathan. #1 will help IT get around the 80% maintenance, 20% innovation conundrum, while #2 will inform where innovation comes from. As for #3, I have a friend whose job is simply to do communications for a large company's IT department. The whole idea of communicating IT's value is codified in a specific group.

Use systems that automate reporting. We have monitors on the way into the break room that depict statistics by individual for the prior week, and they're automatically generated.

As staffs get leaner, the temptation may be to skip the reporting work. Your morale point is a good one.

Anyone have any advice to share on making the reporting work really pay off?

Great points. On #3, GM CIO Randy Mott refers to these kind of performance metrics and project returns as the "revenue of IT." If all you're looking at is how much IT costs, not what you get for it, that cost is always going to look too high. Thanks for finishing off the trilogy, Jonathan.
