re: Amazon Unlikely To Spin Off AWS Cloud Unit
What will be interesting to see that if believing this "do no evil" strategy of Amazon, more competitors host their business on AWS, would some day Amazon pull the plug out of AWS, pay the liabilities, ensure there is no competition to its offering (say streaming movie) and then earn a fortune. That is tough. It will be a legal nightmare and Amazon could be shut due to this and even if that does not happen this will kill the Amazon brand for sure.

I wonder to what extent the same kind of analysis can be done for Microsoft with Azure.

I don't think it would be difficult at all for Amazon to spin off AWS--it would be a financial decoupling, not so much a physical one. Question is, does AWS generate a profit or offer the prospect of generating one? Amazon refuses to say--it doesn't even disclose AWS revenue.

How difficult would it be to hive off Amazon's cloud business? Is it a clear infrastructure split between run-the-business infrastructure and run-the-cloud infrastructure?

I don't doubt the determination behind this Jassy statement: "At the highest levels of this company, we believe that it's quite possible that AWS ends up being the largest business in Amazon." The actual numbers remain one of the bigger mysteries in the cloud community.

What would AWS be worth? Think not just of the operation AWS has, consider the human talent they have in this space. That too is very valuable.

Charlie, the IaaS comparison on NWC shows there are plenty of players that could step up to accommodate Netflix, or any company that starts to feel uncomfortable with AWS as a competitor. How much of a role does that rich and growing landscape have in keeping Amazn "honest" in terms of neutrality? Lorna Garey, IW Reports
