Hmmm. It really just seems that SAP is trying to take all the fun out of it. I mean, who doesn't want to occasionally waste a first-round pick on Ryan Leaf or Heath Shuler? Seriously, though, it's just a process thing, right? They're not claiming to aid in selection? Seems like you could combine this with some other sort of video analysis and learn how to make the right choices.

I wonder if the Buffalo Bills, who announced the creation of an analytics department this year, will take advantage of this software's wider availability?

This is a great idea. As anyone who follows sports knows, there is still a reluctance on the part of teams to rely on data and analytics for scouting and team-building purposes. The "moneyball" method is still often derided by old-school types in baseball. But the teams relying on data to make decisions is growing and SAP is getting in the game at the right time.

Every scrap of data available on 12,000+ NFL prospects doesn't add up to "big data," but when you're searching across and comparing stats on candidates for a particular position during draft day or as a trade deadline approaches, having Hana's in-memory database speed doesn't hurt.
