Greg Hodges, SAS Director of BI Product Management, emailed me the following response: "SASG«÷ use of HDFS is neither proprietary nor dedicated. As such, the same Hadoop cluster can be used for other applications, as well."

What's still not clear to me is whether the use of HDFS is proprietary and dedicated or whether this can be the file system behind a Hadoop cluster that customers use for other applications?

According to Greg Hodges, SAS Director of BI Product Management:
"SAS LASR Analytic Server is an in-memory analytics engine and is part of a broader collection of SAS high-performance technologies (others include our grid and in-database technologies). LASR Analytic Server is an integral part of high-performance SAS solutions. Today, both SAS Visual Analytics and SAS High Performance Analytics are tightly integrated with LASR Analytic Server for in-memory analytic computations. Moving forward, LASR Analytic Server will be the back-end analytic engine for additional high-performance solutions from SAS.

Today, both SAS Visual Analytics and SAS High Performance Analytics - using the SAS LASR Analytic Server - can be run on appliances from Teradata and Greenplum and on commodity hardware. SAS LASR Analytic Server scales from single machines to large distributed systems. On distributed systems using commodity hardware, we leverage HDFS to provide non-volatile local storage, minimizing data movement on the network, reducing traffic and providing more efficient use of resources. It is important to note, storing data in HDFS is not required to use LASR. Data can be streamed directly from virtually any data source into the LASR Analytic server. When LASR Analytic Server runs on Teradata and EMC Greenplum appliances the transfer from the local storage to LASR occurs in parallel and is highly optimized."

I'm not very clear on the back-end strategy where SAS Visual Analytics and the underlying LASR Server is concerned. My understanding is that you can use a commodity cluster to run SAS's high-performance computing (HPC) nodes. Another option is HDFS on commodity hardware, but unless this is a Hadoop cluster that's usable for any and all reasons, not just SAS analytics work, I fail to see the point. Then there's running on appliances from Teradata or Greenplum, but I thought this was just for HPC, not Visual Analytics and the LASR Server.

SAS, please clarify!
