The GE investment is interesting. GE has a sizable software business with big ambitions of its own, much of it focused on doing analysis of data coming off machines like you describe.

Here's another comment on Pivotal from a Hadoop distributor MapR by way of VP of marketing Jack Norris:

GǣWe agree that Big Data requires a revolutionary, enterprise-grade, platform that scales. Our partners, Amazon and Google have gotten cloud infrastructure right, and MapR is proud to be part of their architecture. We don't see how 10 year old Postgres databases and database caching technologies create a revolution.Gǥ

The comment reflects the impression that people perceive Pivotal as a competing with the cloud giants. Postgres is the underpinning of the Greenplum database and "caching" is a reference to GemFire.
