re: DOD Seeks Commercial EHR
The original VA system (VistA) was developed as a proprietary system based on now ancient technology. The VA and DoD would be better off adopting a common commercial platform and then migrating VA to it over time.

However, the government is likely to screw this one up too given their past history in creating layers of bureaucracy and horrendous overspending that lead to nowhere. I have little faith that they will get this right. I hope they prove me wrong.

re: DOD Seeks Commercial EHR
The main issue I see here is the impact implementing a commercial EHR will have on the interoperability efforts with the VA. The main problem hampering our nationwide healthcare IT efforts is the lack of interoperability. I would think that when searching for a commercial EHR system, if they decide to go that way, they should be looking primarily at what is being offered by the vendors to address this issue. If it was me though, I would have continued production of the iEHR system instead of trying to
implement an outside system.
