Microsoft Azure is quietly becoming a real force in cloud computing. I hear far more about them from companies than I do about Google App Engine, despite GAE's years-long head start.

Microsoft's interest in better support for Java on Azure by the end of the year shows the broadening influence of cloud computing on one of the world's most stalwart, proprietary companies. Not too long ago, the only non-Microsoft language supported on Azure was PHP. To compete with Amazon Web Services, VMware Cloud Foundry, and Red Hat's Open Shift, Microsoft must and is broadening what it's willing to support.
