Governments can definitely save a lot of money through big data. A lot of their processes would be streamlined, and just having access to so much information can reveal trends in population that can come in handy (population health comes to mind). The issue is that plenty of federal agencies don't know where to start with Big Data... This is a good interview that can clear up some confusion
