re: Nokia Sells 19,000 Lumia Smartphones To Delta
The phone is probably enclosed in a rubberized protective case that provides the mag stripe reader. If you have a Lowes near you, they insert iPhones into protective shells that contain a laser scanner to read bar codes.

The days of paying Symbol (Motorola) $2K for a rugged Windows Mobile/CE device seem to be drawing to a close. Smart phones are cheaper, sport fantastic screens and can be outfitted with scanners, mag stripe readers and whatever else is needed for half that cost.

Okay, so how is credit card reading supported? I've seen retail operations that use the Apple iTouch inserted into a sled that includes a mag stripe reader, a barcode reader and backup battery power. The Nokia's camera can read a barcode, I'm guessing, but I'm sure they're not counting on flight attendants punching in credit card numbers, right?
