I'd also add: Just 3 of 10 employees in our Salary Survey say they expect "further education/training" in the next 12 months. There's a lot of room for companies to improve on this front.

One I would add: connect with other same-sized companies in different (noncompetitive) industries. Peers learn from each other, but there's less opportunity for that at smaller companies.

Organizations should offer internal training, hackathons and the like. IT talent will sprout up with encouragement and save the company money in the long run.
