I'm skeptical of this save the environment angle. Far too often the programs are sending hardware to a impoverished city in China where they dissemble pieces for small profit, all the while exposing themselves to cancer-causing what-have-yous. I expect to see a revealing documentary on this in 3..2...1...

At least that's a much better price than trade-in at places like Verizon, where they only give you a few bucks for your older models.

Apple is after the retail commission that those selling phones get from carriers for creating new contract customers.

You'd think that Apple could offer more as a merchandise credit than someone could get in cash or from Best Buy/[insert carrier]. It's not as if it's operating on a tight margin. I suppose the convenience of doing a trade-in is a factor, but it's hard to see this being a big factor.
