re: Microsoft-Nokia Deal: Impact On Government IT
There's a good argument to be made that Microsoft has some interesting strengths to work with in the deal.

As the writer -- a former Microsoft exec -- notes, to appreciate why the Microsoft-Nolia deal has more promise than it might appear, itGs worth taking a look under the hood of Outlook. Microsoft Exchange, the ubiquitous enterprise server software that powers roughly 95% of all U.S. federal email installations and those of countless businesses. ultimately prompted both Apple and Google to license and support the Exchange Active Synch (EAS) protocol.

EAS is more than a protocol: It has been the single most important enabler by which mobile government workers across all agencies depend to effectively communicate, collaborate and share information on a daily basis. The government indeed runs on
Exchange.

That said, BlackBerry offers a text book example of how "owning" a core technology is no guarantee that market will stick with you.
