Penske is far from the only company that finds its IT department needing to think like e-commerce gurus. We heard this reality loud and clear from CIOs at a recent advisory board meeting. Are you helping your company think like Amazon? E-commerce turnaround artist will be a hot quality for IT leaders.

Working in online media I'm always thinking about SEO and social media promotion of content, but it was really interesting to hear about those practices being put to use in smart ways at a giant trucking company. Penske knew it wasn't enough to create a user-friendly website -- they had to make it search engine and social media friendly and be active on social media every day. Creating a great e-commerce site is really just step one.

Two big lessons I took from this: E-commerce projects MUST draw marketing, product and IT teams together, and that E-commerce projects never really end. Always more refining to do when revenue's on the line.
