Are healthcare organizations any more or less advanced on BI compared with other industries?

I would say less. It seems that healthcare organizations entered the game a little later than most other industries and as such are a little behind. We're seeing more of a shift now though, as more healthcare organizations are focusing on BI. They know the benefits of BI and have seen it work in other industries, its just getting up to speed and getting big data to work for them.

Having spent a reasonable amount of time working with Healthcare Delivery Organizations and a good amount of my career around Analytics and BI, I echo Jay's observation. A significant component impacting Healthcare Analytics (at many levels) is the tendency to believe the EHR vendor is going to solve their information woes. Healthcare delivery and the surround payment system is complex and few in the industry have come to the realization that they need to own the organization's information management strategy and architecture.

We're seeing new titles in this digital revolution, new responsibilities, new business models, and major shifts in technology spending.
