I get your point, Cara, but yegads! I'm so overwhelmed by email marketing lately--mostly spam, but even stuff from companies I do business with--that this seems like a great idea to me.

Ditto on all points, GoMan.

If I'm not on top of my Gmail for a few days, the amount of Social and Promo email that had been scattered in my inbox would see a quick Search> Select All> Delete move. Now, as you mentioned, if it's organized in a focused way, I'm more likely to rifle through the promo email...even if it's clear the promo time-limit may have been reached (e.g. 24 hour sale....holiday sale....etc).

I understand Gmail's intent with the tabs to help users be more organized, but I quickly got rid of the tab feature as soon as it hit my inbox. I just deleted all the tabs. However, as a member of an industry that relies on newsletters -- and which focuses on open rates -- I can relate to the frustration from email marketers. I think it is good for the marketers to pre-empt the potential decrease in opens, but how will those users even read the explanatory email from Redbox and other companies if they automatically are tabbed?

I was hesitant at first whether I'd like the tabs in Gmail. I've come to really like it. I see a snippet of the new mail by looking at the tabs for social and promo. I'm more likely to open a promo email when I'm focusing on canvasing my promo stuff. With it all in the same inbox, I'm likely to never read it for mentally filtering what I'm really looking for. Being well organized, it is more likely considered for reading.
The flexibility for moving and earmarking types of email to be directed toward any of the tabs is really nice. If the promo source was that important to read straight up, you'd be assigning it in the Primary anyway. If the promo email is simply junk mail, it won't get read anyway no matter where it is at.
