Love and innovation are both overused terms. They are result of work and process. Both terms are also used as code words for deficiencies in other areas. "We're having problems, but I love ..." or "We've had a tough quarter but we're innovating ..." They are overused and prone to not meaning what they were intended. If we view love as an ideal, maybe innovation is the same thing.

Laurianne, process is an interesting concept. I think when it is applied to reliability (please see my previous article) it tends to be used to create consistency and scalability; you can employ people with less expertise and get the same results.

Process when applied to eventuality (future changes in market and behavior), tends to be used to reduce risk; you can avoid pitfalls associated with uncertainty. It also creates a level of comfort with participants who are overly skilled at solving reliability problems.

So I do believe that innovation benefits from process. The repeatability rests
firmly in risk reduction rather than being able to employ people with less
expertise.

Thanks for putting the notion of innovation into more a tangible frame of reference. It's unfortunate how words can take on such superficial meaning once they're swept up in the maw of marketing consultants. Just look at how quickly cloud computing has come to mean all things to all people.

Doug - Nice counterpoint. Funny and thoughtful. Love the metaphor and the triangle tells me drinks were involved. (Nice!) Not sure if the metaphor is an alternative or the other side of the coin.

Also.... not sure anyone expects HBR to solve all our problems. The question is whether or not they're contributing to them by suggesting (again and again) that innovation is a repeatable process. In my experience that's more of a sales pitch than intellectual discourse.

Just to be snarky-- I wish that I hadn't read your bio. Made me think of a great Clay Shirky line about how GǣInstitutions will try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution.Gǥ :)

With both innovation and love, you know them when you see them. But nobody talks about the patience, commitment and hard work involved. How do you market that?
