Kudo's to NYC. It's indicative of a lot of creative effort that's going on many cities across the US, and by broader efforts to drive the tech community to help state and local governments. Two that come to mind underway right now: "Ideation Nation is crowd sourcing ideas for local governments. It would be interesting to compare the mobile dev lessons learned by the insurance companies and the government entities after Hurricane Sandy. You would think both sides must have learned plenty the hard way about tablets, tablet apps, responsive design, etc.

I just found out that the department built its iRideNYC app on the same software code base as this Sandy restoration app. It's also a responsive mobile app. Check it out at http://www.iRideNYC.com/
