It's hard to argue that Google staffers would have come up with a more elegant solution than HIPAA. Our Congress seems to have learned little from the Googles and Amazons of the world.

I don't see HIPAA going by the wayside anytime soon, though. We still have national debates about pat downs at airports violating privacy... HIPAA certainly won't disappear without a battle.

That HIPAA must go sentiment is interesting. Reminds me of the radical openness espoused by Jeff Jarvis in his book Public Parts http://www.amazon.com/Public-P... where he argues against the presumption of privacy using shared medical data as one of the key examples.
