Absolutely shortsighted from the NY government. More cheap rooms means more people coming to town and spending more money. As long as safety and occupancy limits are not violated I think that Airbnb will be an excellent tool to bring even more tourism to NYC. Alternatively, cap and reduce room rates at hotels. Even the excessively dumpy Carter Hotel asks 120$ or more per night, which is at the top of what normal people can afford.
