The introduction of SeaMicro's SM15000 is something like the introduction of Cisco's Unified Computing System servers, introduced four years ago to the dismay of established server vendors. Cisco UCS was designed for the more application-concentrated virtualized data center; Cisco is now number three when it comes to volume of server blade sales, behind only HP and IBM. The SM15000 is a new design tailored to cloud computing and large scale, energy efficient operations. It's produced by a unit of AMD but can run either AMD or Intel chips.
