The discounting part of this is an interesting tactic. Amazon's AWS continued growth keeps driving down the unit cost of elastic computing and storage. Microsoft and others have to keep chasing AWS's continually-decreasing price points downhill. The discounts help Microsoft play catch up a bit. At the same time, Microsoft has made some smart moves building out its Platform as a Service offerings which are attracting enterprises to move of their IT operations to the cloud,
