6 weeks out of US consecutively is the limit before they cancel your entire service.

Exactly. But this helps until you get to a place to buy a local SIM card. I also use Vonage. Which has free calls to all the places I travel. When I get a local SIM, I have my US Vonage number forward the call to my local SIM.

I prefer having an unlocked phone that supports GSM/EDGE/HSPA. You just buy a SIM card from the host country and you're set. No crazy fees.

Is there any limit on frequency of trips? For example, if someone wants to use this multiple times a month, at some point is T-Mobile going to cut you off?
