Re: Dumb watches
I have a watch collection, which predates both my fountain pen and pocket knife collections (don't ask...). I like where Pebble et al are going here. The problem with watches as multifunction devices (remember the horrid "Calculator" watches circa 1975?) has always been data entry. But that problem goes away, thanks to low-power (Bluetooth 4) integration with modern smartphones. Now the watch can return to being, properly, a thing you glance at for information. I like that idea. Also, now that Pebble is spending some time on making its products fashionably stylish, I think they'll be rewarded in the marketplace.

Pebble
It's not a huge update but definitely an improvement in the durability and appearance of the watch http://smartwatchforiphone.com/2014/01/06/release-pebble-steel/

Smart, Fit, or Both?
I see a showdown coming between smart watches like Pebble and the new smart fitness devices like Fitbits, Polar Loops, etc. Do the smart watches begin to add health monitoring features? Or do the fitness trackers begin to tie into smartphones with more general applications? The one that successfully integrates both capabilities is likely to be a winner. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple has already figured this out.

Convenience of a watch -
It is a lot easier to glance at a watch than to haul out a mobile - particularly in winter. I have always worn a watch and always will for just that reason.

Dumb watches
If the Pebble Steel doesn't cut it for you, what would convince you to buy a smartwatch, readers? I can't see the advantage over my phone.

Re: Traditional watch manufacturers take note
The big challenge is that we have a generation of people used to carrying a phone to check the time and perform 100 other tasks. Why do we think they're going to start wearing wristwatches like their parents and grandparents? There's really no compelling reason to start strapping a smartphone to their wrists.

Traditional watch manufacturers take note
Watch manufacturers of the world should really be jumping on this. I imagine their business has nosedived since the advent of the mobile phone and here's their chance to return to prosperity. Instead though we hear about smartphone companies doing it instead. It's a wasted opporunity if they don't ride this wave.
